Closing Dates in Offers to Purchase

It is essential to include a closing date as part of any offer. By doing this, both you and the seller can make plans for moving, and the seller can make plans for buying his or her next homes. While most transactions actually close on the chosen date, do not be so inflexible that a delay in closing creates overwhelming problems.

For instance, if you are renting and need to give the landlord notice that you are moving, you may want to allow a little flexibility in closing dates. Otherwise, if your purchase closes a few days late you could find yourself staying in a motel with your belongings packed in moving van or a paying storage costs.

There are also times when closing may be delayed by weeks, through no fault of your anyone’s. Always have a good back-up plan prepared for such a contingency.
